April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month

During the month of April there will be an extra focus on the condition with the aim of raising its profile.

This will involve:
Education and information – to increase public awareness and attitudes towards Parkinson’s Disease.
To fundraise towards research and support.
To reach out to more people who may be affected by Parkinson’s disease.
To help and support those in need.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s is a neurological condition that affects the brain, and gets worse over time. There are over 145,000 people in the UK diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Parkinson’s develops when cells in the brain stop working correctly.

These brain cells produce a chemical called dopamine which helps to control movement. Symptoms begin when the brain cannot make sufficient dopamine to control movement properly.

There are three main symptoms of Parkinson’s: a tremor, or shaking, that can be uncontrollable as the condition worsens; slowness of movement; and a rigidity or muscle stiffness, all of which present problems for daily living if not supported in the right way. These are the main symptoms of the disease but other symptoms can include issues with sleep, memory and problems with general mental health.

Receiving compassionate care in the comfort, safety and familiarity of your own home has benefits in improving overall health and wellbeing for a person living with Parkinson’s. Moving to a care home at any stage in life can be disruptive and stressful, and this is amplified for those with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s. We know that staying at home and receiving compassionate, one-to-one care from a highly trained and well-matched professional carer improves quality of life for an individual living with Parkinson’s disease.

At Vita Cura, we believe that people living with Parkinson’s disease have the right to enjoy a high quality of life, with dignity and independence in their own home. We know how important it is for people to retain choice and control in life, and for many, the desire to remain in their own home and community is essential to their overall health and wellbeing.
